Anne Frank and Maya Angelou were both required readings for me, too (elementary and high school, respectively) and I did find them interesting enough.
As for the exploitative aspect... Anne Frank was published posthumously, so I wonder if she had the intention of having her inner thoughts displayed for the world when she wrote the journal.
