Forgot to mention that "Zoo Station" is extremely graphic and disturbing and wouldn't recommend it to just everyone. We did have it as a part of the school literature (kids at highschool still have it here) because it was the most REAL substance abuse presentation and what it does to youth. It is a very popular book in my country and was very popular in Germany at the time it was published. Actually, it wasn't supposed to be published as a book but because the interview they did with this young girl Christiane F. (after she was arrested) was upsetting, her experience with prostitution and drug abuse was raw they made a deal to put it together as a book. It's completely autobiographic, no fictional details or names or anything like that. She did write about her first sexual experience and her first love, a boy named Detlef, before her life went to hell and some of these details were actually sweet and normal for a teenager. But, yeah, 98% of a book talks about her living in one room with other junkies, getting heroin, sleeping with the elders, injecting different shit into her veins, dealing with deaths of her closest friends especially girl named Babsi who was the youngest victim of heroin in Berlin that year in the 70's. She was only 14 when she died of a heroin. I think she was around 10 (not exactly sure though) when she started with prostitution and drug abuse. So, the material of this book can be pretty disturbing to many people.
