What are some of your favorite quotes about mental health? What do you like about those quotes? "I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity." Edgar Allan Poe I like this quote because it is by Edger Allan Poe, one of my favorite poets. It also explains what being alone for long periods of time does to a person. In this quote, Mr. Poe uses "sanity" as a euphemism for being alone. "Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways." Sigmund Freud I picked this quote because I know, from experience, that Dr. Freud is right. The trick to expressing emotions, especially the negative ones, is finding an acceptable means of expression such as writing a short story, novel, or poem. "Insanity - a perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world." R. D. Laing I picked this quote because I think it explains a lot about the age we are living in. What are some mental health quotes you don't find helpful or inspiring? Why do you disagree with them? “Lunatics are similar to designated hitters. Often an entire family is crazy, but since an entire family can't go into the hospital, one person is designated as crazy and goes inside. Then, depending on how the rest of the family is feeling that person is kept inside or snatched out, to prove something about the family's mental health.” Susanna Kaysen, Girl, Interrupted: Screenplay based on the book I don't like the word lunatic because it is out of date and doesn't show respect for the mentally ill. "Madness is to think of too many things in succession too fast, or of one thing too exclusively." Voltaire I don't like madness for the same reason I don't like lunatic. "I have had moments where I've had mental-health issues and I've felt like yoga and meditating and reading these Buddhist self-help books actually really help." Mike White I picked this quote because of the suggestion that self-help books of any kind really works. Self-help books don't solve the problem of mental illness. Self-help books might work for one person and not another. In fact, I suspect yoga and meditation do more good than the self-help book. Anything else you want to say about mental health quotes or quotes in general. Other favorite quotes or miscellaneous related tangents welcome. "Be not the slaves of your moods, but their master. But if you are so angry, so depressed and so sore that your spirit cannot find deliverance and peace even in prayer, then quickly go and give some pleasure to someone lowly or sorrowful, or to a guilty or innocent sufferer! Sacrifice yourself, your talent, your time, your rest to another, to one who has to bear a heavier load than you - and your unhappy mood will dissolve into a blessed, contented submission to God." 'Abdu'l-Baha I agree with 'Abdu'l-Baha that helping others will help overcome anger and depression. These two emotions are selfish emotions, and a person has to find a way to free themselves from the cage these emotions lock you in. Helping other by giving them joy is a good way to unlock the cage. |
