Mornings mostly. Occasionally I'll lie awake at night, writing something in my head, until I decide I'll lose it if I don.t write it down. So then I have to get up, boot up the computer and write until it's finished. Which method works best, I'm unsure. Sometimes the night stuff seems good to me in the harsh light of day, sometimes not. The problem is really about judging one's own work. Like everyone else, I'm a hopeless judge when it comes to my writing. I tend to think the last thing I wrote is the best ever and then time gets involved and a few months will probably ensure that most things drop below the memory horizon. Even then, that doesn't mean that the pieces I remember are the best. Often I read things I wrote years ago and think, "Who wrote this? It's bloody good!"
All of which means I have no idea what the answer to your question is.
