I was ten. My 5th grade teacher would have the class all write a very short story, send us out to recess, and when we came back in, she would read the ones she liked to the class without saying who wrote them. Mine were always very popular even though they were the typical drivel that any 10-year old would write, stories about my neighborhood friends battling live dinosaurs in the canyon at the foot of the street and the like. Horrible tripe, but my peers loved them, and I've never looked back.
Some people might say that I had a huge head start over you, but if I hadn't started until I was more mature, I might be a better writer today. There's no wrong way to do it; you don't choose writing. Writing chooses you!
