I feel it's a way to deal with a sealed mask vs. an unsealed mask.

Of course, it's not written that way, but perhaps the original version of the spell requires a sealed mask to work. The golem paste is merely a way to seal AND golemize the mask, thus preventing the need to seal the mask before golemizing.

I believe both can exist, but one would be a modification of the other. Considering how the Libra follows a progression, it's entirely possible that you need to first "burn" a sealed mask before the paste can be deciphered.

And, for the record; I haven't written about the golem paste yet, but it's assumed in my stories that the golem paste exists. But, it's not done by Will, so it's entirely possible that Blackwell figured it on its own. (Maybe an addendum should be made that the Libra suggests combining Spell 2 with Spell 7, by burning the components on a sealant tub?)
