Well, if you don't try anything more than writing essays, those talents aren't going to develop!

I didn't just jump into to writing this big story from nowhere. My very first chapter, "In Which You Tell Umeko Everything"  , is in all honesty quite pedestrian. Admitedly, the Book of Masks was a much smaller place back then, but I think this advice is as true now as it was then: Just try writing the odd chapter here and there. If the story goes down one branch, but you'd have preferred to see it go down the other, try writing what you think would have happened. It doesn't need to be the start of some long story, just a chance to get a feel for writing dialogue and character. You may even inspire someone else to come along and add more.

Get some of that under you belt and you'll feel more confident in taking one longer pieces of work. Like most things, the more you practice writing, the better you get.
