If you haven't been to the Adoption Society threads on the NaNo website, you are SERIOUSLY missing out!

There are tons of threads--Adopt a Plot, Adopt a Subplot, Adopt a Running Gag, Adopt a Romantic Moment, Adopt a Band Name, whatever. You can read through the threads to get ideas other folks have posted. You can "adopt" unlimited ideas and there's no NaNo police to make sure you used them. You can change them as they fit your needs and unlimited people can adopt the same idea.

When reading through them, read with an open mind. Maybe the idea about corporate espionage at the lemonade stand isn't going to fit into your story, but it might spawn the idea of a character having a home-based business or perhaps someone will sabotage a relationship. I've even found ideas in places I didn't think I needed to look. I'm not writing a fantasy, but this idea can work with humans as well. I've already got a plot, but that Adopt a Plot thread has some ideas that work for a subplot. And the Adopt a Title thread is where I got the whole story for this year to begin with.

Actually, I said I got the whole idea for my story from the Adopt a Title thread, yes, but also, more funny, I got it from a title I posted. You can post your own ideas for others to adopt and so I posted a bunch of titles. One just really stuck with me and is now my NaNo project for this year. But with that idea, I've gotten over 80 ideas from the Adoption Society threads to expand upon the original plan. Give them a browse. There's a ton of genius ideas in there. Be sure to leave some of your own when you feel inspired.
