Today I had a character speaking a language that she wasn't very proficient with, so she was saying some extra words that weren't needed, like "the" and "to" -- and as she's talking to the other person, she learns new casual words the other person uses frequently and starts throwing them in a bit randomly (like "that" and "which" and "what"). This is only going to last a very few pages because I know it'll get old fast, but it's a small addition (and adding words wasn't my intent, but I thought I'd mention it here). AND I also wrote this scene twice, from both of the characters' points of view (the native speaker and non-native speaker). AND I don't even know if the scene is going to be in the novel. I wrote it because I was suddenly worried that my premise really didn't make any sense at all. So I had the one character grill the other one about what she was doing and why, to make sure that it made at least some sense. (I know with NaNo you're supposed to just keep going even if you start to think maybe your story has stopped making sense, but I just couldn't stand it. It turned out all right, by the way. I think we're all fine. ) Since they also say not to edit or delete anything, I've started using the font strikethrough so that I don't lose any counted words and rewriting whatever description or thing that I've decided that I hate and had to rewrite. Yes, this is slowing me down. I'm still way behind. This is the pain of my way. |
