Thanks for the thoughts on this... I would note that personal newsfeeds are not dead on start as Writing.Com Support is an automatic favorite of all new members. The Support account posts 4 to 5 newsfeed activities per day, so there's lot of engaging content shown for new members. These posts show an engaging community as most support posts garner a decent amount of response.
In my personal opinion, the Community feed can be a little overwhelming for a new member to the site and though you have a good suggestion, I'd rather keep the more directed newsfeed setup for new members to just have support's posts until they branch out or opt to change their newsfeed over.
