I read the following two books: The Night We Burned, a novel by S.F. Kosa. This is the story of a cult leader who eventually destroys his family of followers in a huge fire. Only three people survive the holocaust. They later cross each other's path when a murder is committed in the small town where the cult lived. A reporter and his assistant who is one of the survivors, investigate the murder which leads to an investigation of the fire. The assistant, hoping not to be discovered, thwarts the reported as he tries to learn the facts of not only the murder, but the fire and her involvement in it. In the end, there are unexpected twists that the writer has successfully hid, springing them at the end. The Lives of Diamond Bessie, a novel by Jody Hadlock. Bessie is a prostitute in Chicago who falls in love with an evil drifter. Thinking that marrying him will enable her to find the daughter taken from her at birth, she learns that while he comes from an affluent family, he is nothing more than an embezzler and a liar. He eventually kills her for her jewelry. Bessie's soul remains on earth where she intends to stay until she sees justice done. She can see and hear what's going on, but she can't influence events in any way. Ultimately, she leaves earth when she sees her killer, her husband, get away with her murder. The story is fiction, but this is an interesting take on the criminal justice system and early 1900's mores. Very interesting, well-written novel. |
