Hm, traditionally at least in Europe the 12 days start on Dec 25 and end in the night to Jan 6. They're called the "Rauhnächte" (probably because back then the winters were still bitterly cold)... and are spiritually significant. People undergo spiritual cleaning and prep for the new year, including certain / incense rituals.
