Honestly I find in other email programs that infinite scrolling makes it easier to review/delete messages in a semi-bulk function. That way I don't have to mentally keep track of pages. My brain may get overwhelmed at first, but then I get into a scrolling rhythm that makes me settle into a task more easily.
If you're willing to up the max to 200 or so, that would be a start. Believe me when I say that even with some cleanouts it's been easy for me to anass a TON of emails over 20+ years, and given how many people have left in that time I do want to clean things out somewhat quickly while ensuring I don't accidentally delete something from someone no longer around (but still important to me)
