The monsters are actually GMO butterflies. Instead of metamorphosis from caterpillars to beautiful butterflies, they transform into ugly flying reptiles that find butterflies very tasty. There is no stopping this process since the government began its sanctioning of GMO biodiversity of all life back in the 22nd century.
