I never got that comment. Whenever I went to audition for a play, I got cast as a male all the time. In spite of being a cis-female all my life. My rolls included Santa Claus, Nurse Pinch(a male character in Shakespeare's A Comedy of Errors), Peter—the brother of Anne Frank—and a rather burly looking ghost crew member.
The only time I got cast as a female lead was in the church nativity play. I got to be Mary mother of Jesus that year...what a mistake. I took the doll who was baby Jesus and showed it to the audience like I was Rafiki from The Lion King.
Anyways nobody ever thought I was feminine. Um..I'd say you handled your teacher's remarks very well.
