Most of what we did as kids would be considered dangerous now! We rode our bikes without helmets all over town, without cell phones so our parents had no idea where we really were, and we didn’t have to go home until the streetlights came on — that was our timekeeper. The streetlights come on, it’s getting late, almost time for supper, better get home. I also remember riding in the back window of our station wagon. You know how there was a little flat space behind the back seats before the back windshield? I used to lie in that spot in the back window—can you imagine a cop seeing a kid doing that today? We used to walk to school in snowstorms (I know, I know) and home again. There were no adults waiting with us at school bus stops. We just knew where we were supposed to go and went. No parental guidance needed. I used to go ice skating at night at a frozen lake by myself. My dad would drop me off there and there would be no one else around. It was surrounded by woods, but there was a house visible up a hill. He’d leave me for about two hours (little girl, 10-12 years old) probably from around 6-8pm —it was dark— and I loved it! So quiet, with the snow and the cold and the leaves frozen in the ice–and the sound of skates on ice. I’m suddenly not as hot as I was... Ah, the memories.
