You don't HAVE to use bitems, but I can say, if someone is going to advertise your thing on a whim, it's easier for them if they can just grab the link right there. Though I admit, only a handful of us regularly advertise other people's stuff. So, is it worth it? Well, as a person who sometimes likes to advertise other people's things, I say, "Yes!" Better safe than sorry when it comes to helping the lazy and forgetful help you.
