A month-long novel-planning challenge with prizes galore. |
So, here's the thing. I grew up in the South Western United States. From the time I was four days shy of 12 years old, till the time I was 18, I lived in New Mexico. I was fully immersed in the culture so I forget what people outside the Land of Enchantment don't understand. I know that people won't understand "The-Q", "Duke City" and Albuquerque are all the same place but not the same as ABQ.(and yes that last one is a place name, just like T or C.) I get that nobody outside the state thinks "red or green?" is a food question. I'm less sure about terms like the Zia, Sopapilla or what real Luminarias and Cholo/la means.( I mean I know what they are but do non locals?) Do people outside New Mexico know what the Rail Runner and Mariachi bands are? Oh bother, I think my terminology list needs a revamp. Anyone want to play guess what this means with me? Please? Also it's become abundantly clear spell check on my phone and possibly on most office programs doesn't speak New Mexican, so I'll have to turn off Auto Correct and desensitize myself to red squiggles this November! |
