It's difficult to tell what this book is about. I chose it for January's theme because the character who I suppose you could consider the main character is a bank robber. Not by choice, but because she had a "new beginning" foisted upon her. Change is change, whether we embrace it as positive or not.
There are some flashes of brilliance when the author considers the human condition and how his characters (of which there are many) deal with what life has handed them.
The book is well written, but I didn't feel an affinity to any of the characters. To me, there were no obvious motivations. Every person had their own reasons for being/doing what they were. This is all well and fine to a point. But not, in my opinion, up to and including the ending.
I wanted desperately to love this book. It is written, after all, by Fredrik Backman, whose writing I fell in love with in A Man Called Ove.
