I think Paul had the most ambition, musically, going into the 1970s. The others seem to me to have kind of stepped back with an attitude like "It's been a great trip (sometimes literally) and there's more to come, but for now I'm going to take a big vacation and live normally for a bit." Paul was the one who moved right into spur-of-the-moment concerts and appearances. He was the one who jumped right into making solo albums. Paul made Ram which had a photo of himself holding a ram. John responded in his next album by including a photo of himself holding a pig in similar fashion.
There were definitely some hostilities in the closing overs, but most of what I've read and seen makes me believe that the animosity worked its way out and the guys were on friendly terms again.
