How to Be a Rockstar Screenwriter (or at least pay the bills): Mindset, Tools, and Strategies for a Successful Screenwriting Career by David Silverman & Rogena Schuyler | 236 pages This book was the briefest of introductions to the most basic of screenwriting advice. It was a very short book with short chapters on a lot of different elements that really didn't go into too much detail. For example, Chapter 4 was "Will Hollywood Steal Your Movie?" and it was a couple of paragraphs of rhetorical questions and basic logic, followed by a summary that just essentially summed things up as, "Nope, they probably won't steal your movie. It's not worth it to steal something they can afford to just buy in the first place." Chapter 22 was "Fixes for Screenwriting Blocks" and it was basically a quick couple of sentences on the usual advice: go for a walk or get some exercise, read or watch something that inspires you, etc. Like a lot of these types of advice books, I'm hard-pressed to actually point to anything in this title that's unique. This advice has all been given before and there are a hundred places (including free online resources like blogs and online communities) that will give you the same advice for free if you ask or look around a bit. Which means that this kind of book is totally interchangeable. Is it completely fine? Sure. And it's on Kindle Unlimited so if you're already paying for the subscription and it's "free" to read, you could do a lot worse than this book. But I'm also not sure that I'm going to go out and tell anyone that this is the one and only book they must read on the topic. If you're curious about the broadest of introductions to screenwriting, it's a fine book. If you know anything at all about screenwriting, you probably won't find this one terribly informative or unique. |
