Never! I do prefer you ask if the contests you need will be opening soon, but if nothing is open or opening soon, you're welcome to choose a similar contest. That means a long contest in August. June and November are short contest months, but you can enter a regular-length contest. September is for contests that allow previously written stuff, but you can enter as regular contest. And April is National Poetry Month, but if everything is closed, you can choose any regular-length contest, poetry or not. I hope that makes sense. The only thing that's really an issue to miss would be August, the long contest month.
