The "Paul is dead" stories were probably started by the Beatles themselves and were certainly at least reinforced by them. No one else could have inserted the faint words, "I buried Paul" at the end of Strawberry Fields Forever. Paul himself likely placed the sign which read "I WAS" on the desk in front of him in the scene from Magical Mystery Tour. It's plainly visible in a couple photos in the album. (Ahh, those were the days, when albums were works of art in themselves!!)
The Rutles legend has a similar myth. According to that myth, a line in the song Piggy In The Middle played backward is said to sound like, "I buried Stig honestly." Naysayers claim that the line Dirk McQuigley actually sings is, "E burres stigano," which they also claim is very bad Spanish for, "Have you a water buffalo?"
