The Wild Robot Escapes by Peter Brown Direct sequel to The Wild Robot, The Wild Robot Escapes follows Roz after she is broken and voluntarily boards an airship to find the Makers – her human creators – and get repairs. While this venture is successful, Roz must keep her learned wild behaviors a secret and pretend to be a run-of-the-mill robot. If she doesn’t, she would be declared defective and be melted down, losing herself forever. So, Roz bides her time and meanwhile is shipped to Hilltop Farm, where she becomes a dairy farming robot for Mr. Shareef and his two young children. While Roz enjoys her life on the farm and excels at helping the place run smoothly, and while she comes to genuinely care for the dairy cows and the Shareef children, Roz can never forget her life on the island or her son Brightbill. She must find a way to escape the farm, escape human civilization, and return to the island where she belongs. Thus begins Roz’s second adventure. The writing in this book is very similar to the writing in the first book: simple, sophisticated, and with a certain reverence for the natural world. The apt descriptions that characterize Peter Brown’s writing focus their attention on various aspects of human life and human settlements more than that of the wild, and a similar respect is given to it. Where The Wild Robot describes and examines the wild natural world in itself, The Wild Robot Escapes describes and examines the human world; the impact that it has on nature; and nature’s impact on it. The illustrations that enhance the story in the first book do the very same in this book; the characters are just as lovable and memorable; and Roz continues to meet new creatures, make new friends, and find a place for herself by helping others. Because the first book had ended on a cliffhanger, I knew from that moment that I would be reading this book, as well. Because the cover of this book shows Roz standing within an abstract depiction of an industrial environment, I was a little nervous about how this story would turn out. The end is very satisfying! There is also more action in this book than there was in the first one, which will please some readers. The Wild Robot Escapes is a children’s science fiction adventure story about a robot who adapted to living in the wild and who must now adapt to live among humans. She learns of her origins, refines her sense of purpose, and discovers just where it is that she truly belongs. To any reader who loves nature and/or robotics, or who loves to follow memorable characters and loves plotlines which are well thought-out and meaningful, The Wild Robot Escapes is definitely a book to try. I will be keeping this book alongside the first one on my bookshelf. ![]() |
