Despite the failures and successes of PBS and NPR- I still believe public funding for news and television stations is important. News programs specifically used to be considered a lost liter- which was acceptable because it was critical that news was unbiased, factual, and most of all, actual news. All that has been lost and imho, I don't think there is a legitimate news organization out there anymore. The internet changed how everything works and real news fell by the wayside. Now that funding has been cut from PBS and NPR, so goes the remaining good they provided. Nova, Sesame Street, so many other good programs that I remember fondly. But, despite that fondness, even I must admit they'd lost their way, so much so that I'd stopped reading them and watching them except for rare instances. Some things need to be a collective funding effort from the populace. There are some things too important to be left to charitable organizations that are often controlled by individual whims or religious doctrine. Some things must be in place to protect the community as a whole. And yet, all those things that once were a collective priority are being cancelled and defunded. It's an old maxim, but often times, the only way we judge the value of something is once it is lost. I just wish we were smart enough to understand it's value before then. |
