Taylor Swift, 100%. Because she's a "pop" star and a billionaire, I know many people who scoff at her, but she's a legit lyrical genius. She's a master of imagery, a gifted storyteller, she uses vivid metaphors - all traits that usually describe highbrow lyricists - yet, her raw honesty and vulnerability coupled with the fact that her writing covers three decades of life, also make her words universally relatable. This one from her new album is making waves: Wood This one is my personal favorite: Speak Now Honorable mentions go to: Jewel, Tori Amos, Michael Stipe, and of course, Phoebe Buffay for "Smelly Cat". I also need to give a shoutout to the more prolific lyricists of Broadway - Sondheim, Hammerstein, Porter, Gershwin, Tim Rice. Musical theatre takes lyric writing to another level. |
