 The Day My Night Light Burned Out


I can't tell you exactly when
It happened but I can tell you how.
I was sitting in my room distracted
By a row of purple lava lamps.
Maybe it was the blue crayon pressed
Carelessly against the bulb.

I can't tell you exactly how
It happened but I can tell you when.
I was lying on a crocodile sleeping bag
Staring at the noose hanging from the rafters.
Maybe it was the black checker pressed
Between my fingers that flicked and flew.

I can't tell you exactly when
It happened but I can tell you why.
I was crawling towards the gazebo doll house
Looking for the pirate doll I'd lost.
Maybe it was sapphire colored anger
That made me thump a numb finger at the bulb.

I can't tell you exactly why
It happened but I can tell you where.
I was sleeping with a fluttering eyelash
Listening to the sweet music of an ancient violin.
Maybe there was no maybe anymore.
Maybe I couldn't sleep and snore and pretend not I.

The day my night light burned out it was me.
