Mike and Franny, summed up:

Fran-Fran and Mike have been very good friends for much time. Mike feels romantically inclined towards Franny and wants an official understanding between them to the effect that their relationship has a romantic element. Franny does not deny that there might be romance involved, but she shies away from the commitment of an actual stated romantic relationship. This disagreement has gone on for a while, prompting Mike, out of spite, to have a fling with somebody else at camp last year. As the date of the party approached, the two were not on speaking terms. Worriment ensued, since both would be together in the same house. It wasn't so bad, except for one evening when they both got emotional. Rather amusing, in a soap opera sort of way, really.

If there's any possibility that you'll ever meet any of these characters, they'd probably kill me if they knew I was gossiping like this! (Even if you never meet them, they'd probably hang me upside down over a hot fire anyway....) But oooh, I do love gossip. And I know they gossip about me.
