Do you write for publication? What markets? Use market guides? Which ones? |

A poem of mine was published by JMW publications a couple of months ago, but they are so small that nobody knows about them. I'm hoping I've not gotten myself into a Poetry.com sort of mess again. I've been pretty paranoid about submitting since my experience with them. I was mortified that I fell for the whole flattery act, but I was unemployed and pretty vulnerable, I suppose. I checked for JMW online and saw them listed in publications lists and such, and since I didn't find any warning articles about them I went ahead and submitted/published with them. I'm reluctant to call myself published though since they did not pay me, but the anthology, which looks more like a quarterly magazine in supposed circulated to universities across the country to help gain exposure for the authors. They only accepted one of the 3 poems I submitted which shows they have some level of selectivity for individual poems at least, but do they publish one thing by every poet to solicit volumes to them. They sent me an order form should I want to order some copies (3 for $40 as opposed to $60 for one Poetry.com volume). The solicitation makes me skeptical, although there are certainly legitimate reasons for it too. I have never paid for any of the volumes where my work appears so for all I know I might not be published at all. *sigh* Right now I'm just picking from the print copy magazines at Barnes and Noble; they are real and I can hold them in my hand. Most of them don't pay either, but I still don't trust the concept of e'zines. I was worried that the religious/spiritual markets would find me opinion pieces too controversial, but I suppose it's worth a try. I appreciate your insight and genuine interest so much. Talk to you soon. Anna R. ** Image ID #873244 Unavailable ** "All the DARKNESS in the world can not extinguish the LIGHT of a single candle." -Francis of Assisi |
