Ch 1 of my 2nd book |
Chapter 1 it was a windy day. the sun was hidden by a mass of clouds, and the griffin grazed in the grass. troy had been in griffin valley for a few days now, and was enjoying the fresh air and beautiful foliage around him. he was accompanied by not only fifty griffin, but also the keeper of the valley, rita. the two had already gotten off on bad terms, but troy had apologized and promised to never commit such a perverted action again. troy had told her that he was seeking a sentinal scroll, but she had never seen or even heard of such a thing. "i told you already, troy. i have never heard of a sitinal scroll." rita stated. "its sentinal, and are you sure?" "how many times must i be sure, twenty?" "it'd be nice." troy said sarcastically. "troy, when you leave here, whenever that may be, i will worry about you forever." rita moaned. "why is that? you like me, don't you?" troy said. "no, you will never be able to take care of yourself." she replied with a laugh. "maybe i should just leave today, then." troy said, turning away from rita. troy began to walk toward the hill, as if he were really going to leave now. "where ya goin' troy?" rita shouted to him. "why do you care?" troy shouted back over his shoulder. "troy, i was only joking. i..i...i actually enjoy you being around, there." rita hollered. troy turned and faced rita, 200 feet away. a smile appeared on his face. "i knew it!" he shouted as he walked back toward her. "don't get too self-championated. you're alright, but i've met better." she explained. "oh yeah, who?" "my father." she answered. "hmm. good one." by now, troy was back by rita's side. rita was about 5'1", but had the most gorgeous light brown hair. her face looked as though it had been carved by angels and that she could never age. her eyes were green, and stunned any man to gaze upon them. troy was truly lucky to have such company. "you're staring at me again!" rita growled at him. "sorry, its just..your......eyes. they're hypnotic." "thank you troy." rita said sweetly. the days troy had already spent wasting his time in a scroll-less valley, it was obvious that he liked rita, a lot. the rest of the day, the two mostly rode a griffin. troy was in back, and rita was right in front of him. night soon fell, and the two lied upon the grass, staring up at the stars. "troy, when do you think you'll be leaving?" rita questioned him. "well, since i have to find a scroll, i would say tomorrow, so i can hurry my adventure along." "oh." the two were silent for a minute. "rita, you know you can come with me." troy said, breaking the silence. "i can't, i have been called to watch over these griffin." "how about this. when i get done with the scroll search, i promise to return here, and we can live here together until we turn into dust. is that fair?" troy suggested. "it is quite fair, but, what if you don't come back soon?" "this search can't take any more than a few months. i guarentee." "ok troy." rita replied. "now, lets get some sleep. i have to hurry, for you." so the two were asleep in a minute. in the morning, troy prepared to leave. "well troy, don't kill yourself." rita yawned. "i'll try not to." troy said, turning from rita. he began walking off, ready to find a scroll. he was hoping that he could find one easily, maybe even two. kent had found a tunnel in the underground network that led upward. it looked as though it were purposely put there. he decided to climb it, so up he went. it wasn't the easiest thing, speaking there was not a ladder or anything to grip or grab onto, but kent was trained, and climbing up a tunnel was one thing he could do. he reached the top, which happened to be dirt, so he simply punched up through the dirt. he climbed up into the sunlight, which nearly blinded the poor archer. "kent, is that you?" a voice said. kent shielded his eyes from the sun. to his surprise, troy was standing before him. "yes troy, what are you doing here?" "i'm going somewhere to find a scroll. hey, maybe we can just join together." troy suggested. "alright then. where exactly are we headed?" "i believe we are headed for muralin plateau. or maybe muralin forest. possibly even both." troy stated. the muralin area consisted of four different environments. first, the plateau, elegent with grass and other foliage here and there. horses grazed naturally. the forest, home of the goblin's cousin, the korblin. the lake, populated by most fish known to man. lastly, the mountain range, where nobody had ever visited, or at least come back to tell a tale about it. the muralin area was known to be a joyous place, where one could find true power and harmony. it was also said to contain an ancient power nobody had ever layed eyes on. of course, being a rumor, the fact of the matter had not quite been proven yet. the two knew that they could get there with little effort, but they weren't sure where the scroll would be, since the muralin area was over 1400 acres. they took a road that led straight into muralin forest. once they were there, they would make it to muralin plateau. it was also said that there was a small town just before the road entered the forest. they would definately go through it, who would honestly avoid a town with food? then, out of what seemed like nowhere, a small bird landed on kent's shoulder. in it's mouth was a note. kent took the note, unrolled it, and began to read aloud, "kent, jayrem and i have found the fire scroll. we have also taken on a hostage, since he is plotting against us. we're headed for black troll swamp, good luck with your adventure. tornado." "ah, so tornado and jayrem are working together, and they found a scroll." troy mumbled. "apparently so. let's get to this plateau, i would like to find the scroll." so the two headed for the muralin plateau, in search of one of the nine scrolls. they weren't sure which of the nine they could find, but any of them found would be a good thing. the only thing they had to worry about was a group that kent had learnt about long ago. "troy, i just wanted to tell you. there is a group called the ancient retrieval squad. some call them the ancient return squad, or even ancient replace squad, but it is really ancient retrieval squad. this squad has devoted centuries in containing the nine scrolls in their origin points. whether the person with the scroll be good or bad, they return it to it's origin. keep an eye out for people with light blue robes, faces hidden. i don't want to find a scroll only to have it taken away." kent explained. "don't worry. if any of those blue guys want to steal from me, they had better be prepared." "troy, they have been doing it for 600 years. stealing from you is like taking a sword from a baby." "kent, i am more swifty than you think." troy said, erogantly. so troy and kent continued their journey toward the town. they knew that once there, they would be able to rest and get supplies, even though they were highly unneeded. after the town, it was all on their own. the search, the obtaining, and the containing. then, a man ahead of them, coming toward them, was singing a song that could be heard from the other side of the world. he sung happily, "the secret lies within the hiest, to where the rubbish grows. although you may not like it there, its different for your toes. the land is full of all the rest, it has all attributes, even when i sing this soft, i sing it to the mutes." troy and kent stopped dead in their tracks. the man was singing a song cheerfully, but the words were quite strange. eventually, the man was within whisper distance of them. he stopped and smiled over at them. "good day to you two." he roared. he was a jolly man, with a bit of a belly on his front. he had messy brown hair, and a red glow to his face. "hello. what do the words mean in your song?" kent asked politely. "oh, that silly song. it is a song that explains where a magic item is in the muralin area, although it still intrigues me." "hmm. could be the scroll." troy blurted. "scroll? i am unaware, i am a simple traveler. i see every city, every year." "interesting. i guess you are coming from the city ahead, the one prior to the plateau?" troy asked. "oh, yes. borit. fine city. great food." "thank you, good sir. as long as it is welcoming, we are fine." kent replied. "well, i must walk onward. goodbye friends." the traveler said, walking off, beginning his song over again. troy and kent began their walk again. luckily for the two, troy's memory was untouchable, and he remembered the song completely, and even a few notes that were exagerated. he began to sing softly, hoping to find a meaning with the lyrics. "the secret lies within the hiest, to where the rubbish grows. although you may not like it there, its different for your toes. the land is full of all the rest, it has all attributes. even when i sing this soft, i sing it to the mutes." "hmm. isn't a hiest a difference in elevation. but wait, three of the four have different elevations from the sea level. all but the forest." kent stated. "well, we narrowed it to three." they hummed the lyrics in their heads, hoping to find another clue in the words. if only they knew what rubbish was. rubbish was often a term used to describe a silly idea, another word for the ever popular word, gibberish. "rubbish is probably gibberish. maybe we need to go to town and find out some rubbish, either about the lake, plateau or the mountain." troy explained. "good idea. lets not think about that song, its driving me insane." "well, we can stop talking about it, but i need to think about it more in depth." troy growled. so the two continued toward the city, troy with a song in his head, kent with food in his head. troy repeated the song in his head over and over again. kent, on the other hand, had images of dancing food, well-prepared food. that of a master chef. although you may not like it there, its different for your toes. what did it mean? troy couldn't begin to understand such a part in the song. hmm, troy thought, it could either mean that your toes hate it more than you could imagine, or you hate it and your toes enjoy it. he wasn't sure. maybe the word although was some sort of clue. then he thought to himself, although is another form of even though, so your toes must hate it more than you can imagine. he began to recite another line. the land is full of all the rest, it has all attributes. this was simple enough. the one with the scroll had different things from each of the others, so it had different features. plateau has no water, so it isn't like the lake. it has raised terrain, so it could be like the mountain, in a small way. it had trees like the forest, so there was one. then, the lake. it had water, but did the mountain or forest? the plateau, probably not. the mountain could have water, a stream flowing down. it had trees, and different terrain levels, it was a mountain, it was the terrain level. hmm, what did the mountain have of the plateau? terrain difference, but that was common in three of them, so it couldn't be that. maybe there were horses in the mountain. with the clues gathered, troy had his mind on the mountain. on to the next line of the song. even when i sing this soft, i sing it to the mutes. troy hadn't the slightest clue as to what this meant. troy had been thinking about the song so much, he didn't realize that they had arrived at the city. the city was much larger than they had expected, and was crowded with people. as they entered the city, they were completely unaware of the dangers that might lurk within it. |
