Written for What's Your Nightmare. A nightmare I still remember. |
I opened my eyes and looked up at the ceiling. The room was filled with light; it was later in the morning and it took a moment for my eyes to adjust. I looked over at my sister’s bed, but it was empty. Odd, normally she was the one to sleep in. I laid back down; it was Saturday so I didn’t need to get up to get ready for school. On one side of the room were two beds with a nightstand between them. Across the beds was our dresser covered in frilly decorations. I hated them, but our mom had insisted on decorating our room. The walls were painted blue; my favorite color. My bed was on the left; on the right were the closet and the door. I stared at the music box on the dresser. It was a ballerina and when you turned the key she spun around and music played. My grandmother had given it to me and it was one of my favorite things I owned. I heard a soft scratch and looked over at my door; where the sound had come from. The door was dark wood and it showed off every notch, line and flaw. I noticed something strange; the door appeared to be moving. It was subtle at first, but the lines in the door were shifting. I closed my eyes and rubbed them. I must still be sleepy; my eyes are playing tricks on me. When I opened them; I was terrified to see the door was the same. My heart started to race and I couldn’t breathe. Seconds went by; but it could have been years, because time had to come a halt. I grabbed my blanket and clutched it tight. Slowly I could see shapes take form on the door. They were faces; but not human. Horrifying demons; their eyes turned to stare at me. The demons were starting to push out of the door. Flat faces were becoming rounded with depth. They were coming out of the door and into the bedroom. I pulled my blanket up to my chest; my hands ached from squeezing so hard. I counted three, but there was others who were still on the door; watching. I thought about escaping, but my bedroom was on the second floor. I imagined opening the window, taking off the screen and jumping down. Except I was on the second floor and fear of breaking my leg kept me from taking the plunge. I tried to scream, but nothing came out. My body was frozen; I couldn’t move. There were three demons free and they had their eyes locked on me. They each were hideous and horrible. The tallest was dark red with large spikes coming from its head. The second was a sickening yellow with a smooth head and large jagged teeth. The last was the shortest it was brown, its head was shaped like a knife and its limbs were longs. They all had long razor sharp talons and black eyes. The tallest pointed at me and smiled. I could see rows of small teeth like a shark. I couldn’t take it anymore, I hid under my covers. “Wake up,” I told myself. “It’s only a dream, it’s only a dream.” I kept repeating this over and over. I could hear some more scratching and shuffling but I ignored it. The room became quiet and I waited for the nightmare to be over. I let out a sigh and I was about to peek over my blanket when it was ripped out of my hands. My bed was surrounded by demons. I shook my head, it couldn’t be true.” It wasn’t real!” The tall one reached and grabbed my ankle. I could feel pain, its claws dug deep into my flesh. It pulled me across the bed. I grabbed at the sheet and started kicking my feet. I flipped myself over and started thrashing; trying to free myself. My other leg was grabbed; it instantly felt hot and blood began to pour from the wound. I tried to hold on, but I was yanked off my bed. The sheet came with and I fell on the floor. My chin hit the carpet and I felt disoriented for a second. I kicked my leg out as hard as I could and the demon let go. I rolled over and looked up at them. The tall one had a tight grip and its talon’s sunk deeper into my muscle. The pain was immense and I screamed; but nothing came out. It pulled me forward and the other two grabbed my arms. I tried swinging them, but there claws tore at my skin. They dragged me towards the door. In the middle was a black hole, but I could see a flickering light. Demons surrounded it; dancing, laughing and clapping. I could smell smoke and I knew they were taking me to hell. I started to cry and I finally let out a shriek. They could have moved me faster, but they were taking their time. These demons wanted me to be afraid. There was banging on the bedroom door. “Christina? What’s wrong? Why are you screaming?” “Jennifer! Help me!” “I can’t open the door! It’s locked!” “Help me!” We right in front of the door. I could see into the dark hole; flames shot up and the heat was terrible. “Jennifer!” I was able to yell once more before I was dragged into the door. I instantly felt my body be consumed by fire. I could hear my flesh sizzle and smell my skin burning. They dragged me deeper into hell. I looked back and for a moment I could I see my room. The opening started closing and it blocked out the light. I watched as it was shut and I couldn’t stop screaming. |
