The First Draft of Complete Trilogy |
I started the first drafts of all three books in the first trilogy. One after the other as soon as I had finished a very simple kind of outline. I had written during my professional career for many years, complex documents, many of which were in the public domain. But they sure as heck weren't fiction or entertaining. I cannot recall, how many months I spent on these first drafts. Quite enamoured with my complex story and confident in my writing skills. When I finally finished, I didn't even do much editing before I printed them all out and put them in these folders. I had read it was good to take a few days and then take a look. The next day I picked up a John Grisham book, that I had read before. I had a sinking feeling just a few pages in. Something was horribly wrong with my books. By the end of the day I realized I had not written them as novels, there wasn't even dialog. It was all narrative, there was no real point of view, no scenes, no real characterization. It was simply a horrible mess and a waste of time. After moping for a few days, I started studying books on writing fiction and started studying the books I liked. I was ready to really start the journey. |
