Hiding your flusterment beneath your ever-present facade of calm coolness, you shelter beneath a bench as you get your portable communicator out. A situation this bizarre warrants breaking that supposed 'radio silence', you decide. Who cares if this mysterious 'enemy' may overhear the conversation - they'd probably think that you were speaking in code.
"Hello?" chimes an overly cheerful contact.
"Sterling. Could you tell me why that watch -"
"Shrank you? No. But rest assured that we have a contact in the city all ready to - heh - pick you up."
"Most droll. Who is this contact?"
"A freelancer who happened to be in the area; a local. She'll be around."
"Her name?"
"Miss Petit."
"Seriously?"
"Seriously."
"Great. Well, thanks for all your help..."
"Don't mention it. The code phrase that you should use to identify her is 'Wine tastes better in August'. She should reply with 'And yet the weather is incelement.' Try and get that device back to us pronto. The lab boys are rather eager to get a good look at it."
"Well I'm rather eager to - "
The cut-off on the other end of the line tells you that you needn't waste any more breath. And if you want to get out of this situation, you'll have to find this Miss Petit, with only some goofy codephrase to identify her.
You cast your eyes about the immediate area, your view only slightly obscured by the legs of whoever is sitting on the bench. If you were a French secret agent, where would you be..?
The outdoor cafe across the way has opened for business, and already several people are sitting at the tables, eating drinking and chatting. One young lady sits apart, sipping slowly from her cup and casting her eyes around the square.
The only other likely candidate would be the woman sitting by the fountain, a bouquet of flowers in her hands, clearly waiting for something. She couldn't be any more obvious a spy if she were reading a newspaper with eyeholes cut into it.
With the cobbled square still mostly empty, you should choose one woman to go to before traffic picks up too much.
