Immediately after the seatbelt sign dimmed, Jessica stood up and closed her book. She began to walk in 15b's direction. She deliberately bumped the book into the back of a seat in row 16, sending it sailing in the target's direction. His smile brightened when he saw Jessica and he said, "You again?" with a laugh.
Jessica giggled her best impersonation of a bemused schoolgirl. She apologized and thanked 15b for his help. He said, "It's nothing, Miss... Um... Miss? Uh, may I ask your name? If we're going to keep meeting like this, I'd at least like to put a name to your lovely face."
Jessica tried... She really tried to not be bull-dozed by his charm, but to no avail. She covered her mouth and demurely said, "Jess... Jessica, but everyone calls me Jess."
"Jess? That suits you. Name's Joe." The half hour conversation that followed elucidated Joe's previous 26 years, from being born in the foothills of Virginia and growing up in the hills of West Virginia to playing football for VA Tech and attaining his boyhood dream of becoming a Civil Engineer. After allowing Jess time to fill in some of the blanks-- the Hows, Whys, Whens and Wheres-- Joe effortlessly brought the conversation back to the present. "Now-," he said, "what is this book you keep throwing at me?"
She kept eye contact a little longer than she had originally intended, but she was so taken with Joe's gaze that she could not help herself.
"Patrice Cromwell? Murder/Mystery, huh?" Joe asked. "I'd take you for more of the ROMANCE type of girl."
"Oh Joe, Joe, Joe... I dabble in romance, but my true love?" Jess whispered quietly, staring straight into Joe's eyes. "My true love has always been murder."
