She needed help more than anything right now, and there's safety in numbers. Fueled by nothing but adrenaline she ran to the boys, the human like roars of her pursuers growing ever louder as they gained on her, the boys went back into the classroom, the one in black held the door open ready to receive her, and urged her to hurry. The zombies were catching up and were nearly breathing down her neck. Just as she made it to the room the boy in black slammed the door on the zombie, trapping it in between the door and the door frame.
He held the door as tightly as he could while the boy in orange grabbed a chair and started using push push against the zombie in an attempt to push it clear of the doorway. Another zombie joined the first and started to push against the door, and almost broke through both the boys holding them at bay. They recovered and began to push back once more; it was at this point that Mary joined in the struggle. Her body lacking in physical prowess was of little value, but it was still just enough to finish the job. Just before they managed to fully push the monsters out of the doorway, one of them grabbed the boy in black by the arm and scratched at his sleeve before being fully expelled from the room. Thankfully he was unharmed. The struggle only lasted a few seconds but felt like an eternity.
“Hoo… that was close! nice thinkin with the chair travice.” Said the boy in black.
“What the heck Alex!! We could have gotten out of here if you didn't try and play hero!”
“Ok look, I know what I did was a little risky, but I couldn't just leave someone to die knowing I can help.”
“If you keep that up you’re gonna get us both killed!!”
“We have to maintain some form of humanity, so we don't become like animals!”
“I get that but this isn't the time to get all humanitarian!!”
“If not now then when?”
“When we're not struggling just to save ourselves!”
“Ok I get it. I’m sorry and I'll try to think more practically next time. Let’s just wait until they leave, and we’ll decide what to do then. sounds good?”
“Yeah I’ll watch the door, you see if she’s ok.”
Mary sat with her head between her legs trying to catch her breath. Alex walked up to her
“you alright?” he asked. Mary was still too out of breath to give a verbal response. She was about to give a thumbs up, to confirm she was indeed “alright” but instead she started to cry. She cried tears for her friend who died within the first 10 minutes, she cried tears for herself who could have died were it not for the kindness of two strangers, she cried because of the death and terror that waited just outside the door, and cried because of the fact that any moment could be her last. Alex put his arm around her shoulder. “Hey it's ok, you're safe now. We’ll get through this.” she did not respond and only continued to cry. Travice moved out of the line of sight of the zombies and hoped that they would forget they were in there, Alex did the same and was able to move Mary as well.
After 5 minutes of tears Mary had regained her senses, the monsters had given up, but continued to roam the hallways outside the classroom. When Alex saw she had come around, he thought that this would be a good time to introduce himself and his friend.
“Feeling better now?” Alex asked sincerely. Mary with eyes still bloodshot from crying, and feeling a little embarrassed about her emotional display, she gave a light nod.
“My name's Alex, and that's Travise.” He gestured to his friend. “What's your name?”
“I’m Mary”
“Well it's nice to meet you Mary, even though the circumstances aren’t.”
Mary simply nodded, still a little too emotional for a full conversation
“Alex assumed this and decided to simply keep her company until she was ready to talk. Besides, there wasn't really anything to talk about anyway.
As they waited, Alex or Travice would check through the window on the door every so often to see if it was safe for another escape attempt.
2 hours passed and the dark ground illuminated only by a red and yellow sky slowly faded into a pitch blackness that seemed to blot out everything in existence. The light illuminating their classroom and the halls of the building separated them from the darkness, and made them feel cut off from the rest of the world. Travice made one final check, looking out into the halls to see if the monsters continued to lurk outside, trying not to aggravate them again as he had done once or twice before. When he saw the halls were empty, he turned back to his fellow survivors
And gave them his report.
“Are you sure it's safe?” asked Mary
“Yeah i'm sure, the halls are totally empty you can see for yourself.”
“So what are our options?” Alex asked.
“Ok so…” Travis thought for a second. “We could make our way to the roof and wait for help, or we could try and escape this thing on foot.”
“Well those are some sucky options.” Mary said
“I don't know, I kinda like the first one.” Alex said
“We don't know how long it will be until help arrives or even if it will arrive. We could be up there for days with no food or water.”
“And if we take our chances out there we'll be exposed and in the dark” said travice.
“I still think getting to the roof is our best option.” Alex added
“Both options seem just as bad for different reasons to me but we can't stay. So I”ll do whatever Mary decides.”
Mary considered her options carefully. On one hand, going to the roof would be putting all their eggs into one basket. Sure there was a chance that help would come for them, but if it didn’t they would have no food or water, and getting out of the building from the roof would be much more difficult than trying to escape from where they are now. On the other hand, they would be able to scavenge for any supplies they need and might be able to flag down help if it does come for them, but they will be exposed and vulnerable. She would have to think very carefully, their fate could be riding on this very decision.
