Deciding that this man is only trying to help, she followed Officer Cameron down the hall towards the elevator. She didn't bring much with her, just her cell phone, purse, and a decorative dagger that was handed down by her mother, now deceased. The dagger itself was beautiful, a sharpened 6-inch blade with a golden handle, and a gold-laced steel sheath to go with it. It was the only protection she could muster from her luggage, and the only item she felt she needed, as it was handed down from her family for generations. She would not leave it. She kept it hooked the belt of her jeans, for now.
As they entered the elevator and descended, Laura sternly asked again the situation.
"There's this disease, infection or something going around town," Cameron started. "People are... well, they're not themselves anymore. Every member of the RPD has been called out to try to help, but now the orders are to contain."
Laura was incredulous. "Contain? The entire city? Sounds more like a viral outbreak."
"Could be, I dunno. All I know is my partner was killed by a citizen." Cameron tried hard to choke back a sob. "He was... eaten."
The elevator doors opened and they briskly walked down the new hall to the front door. A police car waited for them outside on the curb. Laura noticed a young man in the backseat, and decided to ask about him.
"Hey, that's not one of them, is it?"
"No, that's a guy I picked up at the diner a few blocks down. Said his name was Tom Rhelk. Those infected people chased him out of the place, and he flagged me down. I was going almost too fast to see him, I thought he was one of them." He peered through the window at him. "He seems to have calmed down some. He was hysterical earlier... Well, hop in and I'll get you to an exit."
Laura gazed through the back window at this man. He was looking at his feet with his head down. His black hair came down to his jaw, so it hid his features.
Suddenly he lifted and tilted his head just enough so that a single eye stared back at her.
