I gulped. "Uh –" Just ask her, just ask her, just ASK HER! "Two more milkshakes, please. Banana, this time." Damn.
"Coming right up," she said with a warm smile that made me open my mouth to try again – and Julie made pause expectantly, so that I instantly lost my nerve.
"Uh – and two more triple bacon burgers with fries." Shit. Choked again.
"You guys must be hungry," she said, and winked. "That's what we like to see here! Can I get you anything else? Maybe from our dessert menu?"
I'd been backed into a corner now. "Yeah, sure, why not. Um... what would you recommend?"
"Well," said Julie, putting a hand on her chunky hip thoughtfully, "I'd try the Swirlwind, that's our ice cream sundae. Choose two flavors and we swirl them together. I like Cookie Dough and Peanut Butter, myself!"
"That sounds great," I said weakly. "Two extra-large Swirlwinds, please."
When I returned to the table with a groaning tray and no date with Julie, Dmitri gave me a pitying shake of the head as he drained his first chocolate milkshake.
"Not only didn't you get her number, you also ordered ice cream at the same time as the burgers. It's going to melt!"
We ate quickly, which wasn't hard for me – I needed something to do to smother the hot humiliation of my failure. Despite my initial skepticism about two burgers, I was starting on the third before I'd even noticed, and I'd made short work of the fries, too. I was definitely getting full when I started on the Swirlwind, though; Julie's two favorite flavors were the thickest and densest on offer, and the XL size tub was like a small bucket. I did manage to finish it though, even if it did mean unbuttoning my jeans, and when I saw that Dmitri was still struggling to finish his dessert when I'd already leaned back, cradling my distended belly, I couldn't help but feel a tinge of pride in among the physical discomfort.
"So," said Dmitri as we got up slowly to leave, "you're just gonna give up, huh?" he glanced towards Julie, who was ringing up an order for a couple of pudgy sorority girls.
