Chapter #4

In search of the genie's lamp

    by: Simpl Author IconMail Icon
Nel defiantly opted to seek out the genie lamp in spite of the warnings she had heard. She quickly thanked the stranger for the help and rapidly moved away. "I'm not sure where I'm headed but being with that stranger was strange," she thought. She flew in the first direction her small wings took her. Below she spotted a green grassy place and landed delicately on a bench placed beside a small body of water. "Now this more like it. Looks like home where I can sit quietly and think without disturbance." She began to think.

Her alone time was interrupted when she saw two human girls coming toward her on the path beside the water. "Oh oh," she thought, "what do I do now. I'm small but not invisible. It's too late to move out of sight as they are here in front or me." So, Nel sat very still.

"What is that on the bench? It's small and has bright colors on it." One girl stepped closer. "It looks like a teensy weensy human with wings. How precious!"

"I don't know what it is," reported the second girl, "but it seems to be alert and alive. Can you talk?" She directed the question to the oject on the bench.

Nel was surprised to be addressed by the human but responded, "Of course I can talk. I'm a Pixie and proud to be one even though I'd like to be much bigger."

"Well, that's a fine howdy do," the first girl said. "Is there anything we can do to help? We like to help others - that's what we do best." She smiled at her friend who was nodding in agreement.

"Suzie's right," the second girl said, "and we know a lot about this city so we probably can be helpful."

"Umm, I met a stranger who told me there is supposed to be a genie's lamp here somewhere," Nel said. "Would you be able to help me find it?"

"I dont know. Miriam," she addressed the second girl, "would you know anything about that?"

Miriam scratched her head while Nel looked on. Then she smiled and looked directly at Nel. "I do know a very talented magician here in town. If anyone would know about a magic genie lamp, she would."

"Can you take me to her?," Nel asked with pleading in her voice.

"I think that can easily be arranged. But first, tell me your name."

"I am Nel of a little-known forest. This is my first time to a big city,. It's quite overwhelming, you know - so big and all."

Both girls looked sympathetic and nodded. Suzie spoke: "Nel, I can imagine how it is all very peculiar to you. I have two questions for you."

"Yes," Nel said.

"How do you think finding the magic lamp, if there even is such a thing, will help you? And, if Miriam is going to take us to her magician friend, can we pick you up and carry you?"

Nel pondered a moment, "I'm hoping that I can use the magic lamp to become bigger because, in my world, bigger is better. You see, the biggest pixies have the most power and therefore the best opportunities."

Both girls nodded as they listened attentively to her.

"As to being carried," Nel continued, "it is possible and probably, under the circumstances, would be the least obvious way for me to get places. I'm sure many humans would be overly curious or otherwise distracting from my purpose, if you know what I mean."

The two girls smiled knowingly at one another. "You're right about that," Miriam chuckled. "We have lots of 'bad apples' here in this city. Best that you hang with us."

Under her breath, Nel whispered, "I hope this is the right thing to do." Aloud she said, :"I don't mean to rush you, but when can we start?"

Suzie looked at Miram. Both girls shrugged. "Why not start now?" they said.
