You leave your eyes closed when you wake, you can feel the dragon on your arms. Still asleep. You leave your head on the ground and try to sleep again. You feel as if you had run for miles despite the fact that you have obviously slept for hours.
"Bloody dragons, taunting us by throwing the dead into the village." Said a gruff voice nearby. Your eyes fly open and you see two men, one bulky and carrying a hunting spear while the other was taller, thin but with obvious strength, like the longbow at his back. You can't run without being seen and surely being seen is not a good idea when you are holding a dragon. You stay as still as possible hoping that they will miss you. They have entered the clearing now.
"Still," said the tall man with the longbow, "It works in our favour, we know they missed one. He's probably out in the forest. I only saw the party once but I'd swear that I didn't see the young mage in that pile and it would explain how we lost. That mage was supposed to be almost a guarantee of victory."
"Probably deserted, 'e looked like a cowardly runt if you ask me." Said the bulky man with the spear, it had been he who spoke first as well.
"That is not for you to speculate Clide. Deserter or not he is powerful and if we intent to destroy that dragons nest we are going to need power. Now stop complaining and keep an eye out or I will see to it personally you get the night watch for the next three nights. Anyway Do you want the dragons to find him first. They showed respect to our dead. But if they know one survived they'de be hunting him sure as I beat you at stones each night."
They had almost reached the other end of the clearing now, your almost safe. Then the dragon makes a small snuffling noise from your arms. The taller mans head whips around, the other mans is slower but they are both staring at you. You feel panic rising. Then you realise, they are not staring at you. They are staring through you. Their eyes seem to be focused on a point behind you, as if they could see through you to the other side. The bulky one shrugs and mutters some under the breath profanity about ghosts in the woods. The other admonishes him as a superstisious fool and orders him onward to continue the search. Soon the two have disapeared into the trees.
