Tom decided to keep the necklace out of sight until he could find a way to turn it into cash. He stuffed it down into his pocket and started sweeping the factory floor.
As he swept, he looked around. Tom knew some of the older kids often resorted to petty theft in the evening. Maybe he could follow one of them to someone who would be willing to buy the necklace.
He was sweeping a pile of discarded scraps over to the bin near an older boy named Bill when he overheard the conversation Bill was having with the pale, thin boy at the next machine.
