You move slowly and carefully toward the immense girl, flinching as one leg suddenly swings up and crosses over the other. You find yourself holding your breath as you get closer and closer to her.
Soon, you've reached the leg of the desk, and you're staring up at her, trying to figure out how the heck you can get her to notice you. You look at her immense shoe, and think that maybe you could climb her. But you also think that might be dangerous -- what if she thinks you're a bug and swats you?
You could try for her purse. She set it in the basket under her chair, on top of a textbook; the strap is hanging down and would make a perfect handhold for climbing. Once there you might be able to get her attention when she looks inside next.
Then again, do you want to try to get this eighth-grader's attention at all? You know the teacher, Mrs. Symington, is a decent person. and a 33-year-old is probably going to be more responsible than a fourteen-year-old. But to get to her, you'd have to traverse the whole classroom, running a gauntlet of thirty-odd boys and girls.
