“Perhaps you have never heard of the circus-ircus-ircus?”
Templeton raised an eyebrow. “A what? What’s a circus?”
“A travelling spectacle,” she explained. “Animals perform stunts and tricks for people. It’s a sort of place for misfits and the like to belong.”
“Good for them…”
“And… it’s a place for lots and lots of food to be eaten…”
The rat’s ears perked up. “Oh, is it, now?”
“Oh yes. Lots of food. Popcorn, candy floss, caramel apples, candy, hot dogs, sandwiches…”
“Sounds heavenly! Is there one near here?”
“Indeed. I heard mention of the Zuckerman family heading to one tonight. They’ll be travelling in the pickup in a few hours. Perhaps if you’re quick and sneaky, you can join in the fun.”
Templeton’s mouth was watering, his nap now forgotten. “Yes...,” he murmured. “Time I had a proper feast…”
“A nightly feast,” the goose added hastily. “After all, the circus doesn’t just stop – it travels. Every night, you’ll have a fresh feast awaiting so long as you stay with them. Doesn’t that sound marvelous?”
“Oh, it does… it does… It sounds… excellent! I must be off! Tell Wilbur that if I’m not back tonight, he’s free to eat his slops forever! This circus will be like heaven on Earth!”
Templeton rolled himself over until he was on his feet. His hind legs dangled helplessly as his belly had grown to the point they didn’t reach the ground anymore. Struggling, he rolled back until he was up on his hind legs. He grabbed hold of his stomach with his front legs and carried it awkwardly, waddling to the fence and heaving himself over it. He didn’t bother with the goodbyes. He knew he wasn’t well-liked by his fellow farm animals. Time to leave their judgement behind and have a good old fashioned free-for-all.
He found the pickup truck and saw some trash to hide under. It was a very long wait. He listened to the farmer and his wife board the truck and drive off down the road. He listened to the irritating chatter of the family and children as they climbed into the flatbed. He listened to the drive there, and then he felt the truck stop as it parked. He waited until he was certain everyone had disembarked and poked his head out over the side.
It was amazing. There was a large colorful tent with searchlights waving back and forth. He could hear loud voices and lots of racket and music coming from within the structure. He also saw lots of people still walking around outside. Scowling, he clambered down and scurried his way over to the nearest smaller tent. There had to be a place he could hide until the lights went low.
