It wasn't very long after the defeat of the hyenas and Scar, with Simba having taken his rightful place as King of the Pridelands, that Nala found herself to be expecting. She and Simba were ecstatic at the thought of having a cub together, as well as an heir to Simba's throne.
Since a lion's pregnancy lasts for about twelve months, Nala knew she had plenty of time to prepare for the impending arrival of her little one. Besides, other than gathering parenting advice from the other lionesses, all she really had to do was make Simba's and her part of the den cub-friendly.
Sarabi and the other lionesses kept encouraging Nala to rest and take it easy. When they all went out on hunts for the pride, they told Nala to stay in the den and rest or relax at the waterhole, which often meant being entertained by Timon and Pumbaa. Nala had to admit, she felt pretty tired during the early months, and she was grateful to be able to get the extra sleep she needed than have to use up all her energy hunting.
When the lionesses would return from a successful hunt, Simba and the rest of the males all had their fill, as was to be expected. However, afterwards, the lionesses would then let Nala have her turn at the meat-filled carcasses, making sure the young queen had plenty of good, fresh meat to fill her stomach and ensure the cub growing in her belly would be healthy and strong.
As this pattern continued week after week, it was easy for Nala to get used to such prime treatment, and she admittedly got a bit lazy. Lying down or sleeping all day long, and then being pressed to gorge herself on delicious gazelle, antelope, or zebra, quickly began to show itself on Nala's formerly very lean frame. However, being pregnant, it was hard to tell if the slowly growing roundness to her belly was due to excess calories or the cub beginning to make itself known.
