The minute she had turned around after locking the pub’s door, she wished she hadn’t for right outside the pub, bathed in light from the street lamps was Liam Sheridan and a man whom she vaguely recognised, brawling on the kerb.
“Liam! What the hell is going on here?” Jessica demanded as she stepped in, with the help of a few bystanders, “What are you doing?”
“Jess, you gotta let me at him, this eejit was badmouthing Kate and I will not stand here letting him go on about her like she was a piece of meat.”
“Alright, go home Liam and clean yourself up, and you!” She added to the stranger, “Stay the hell away from my best friend, Kate!”
As the oddly familiar stranger slunk off, Jessica led Liam home. Once in, armed with a bag of frozen peas, Jessica burst out laughing.
“I’m so glad you’re so amused by this whole affair!” Liam commented wryly.
“I’m sorry Liam but of all the people to get into a street brawl, you are the last person I’d expect to see!”
“I suppose you’re right,” Liam replied, a smile starting to appear on his battered face, “but honestly, you should have heard him, boasting about Kate, like she was some prize he had won.”
“I don’t think she’s seeing anyone at the moment, I should know.”
“Well he seems to think she’s his. But she deserves someone who respects her, someone who will really look after her, someone who loves her. Someone like...”
“Someone like... you? Liam Sheridan! Are you in love with Kate?”
“What? No! How can I? I mean, she works the tables at the Plaice and I work in the kitchens and so , why should I even notice her. I mean, it’s not as if she’s around in the kitchen much ... but when she is you notice, and when she comes in you know the most beautiful girl in the world just walked in, rushed off her feet with incoming orders but still with that gorgeous smile.”
“Liam, I had no idea. Does Kate know?”
“No. And she never will.”
“Why?”
“I’m just a chef, what can I possibly offer her?”
“Liam, she’s just a waitress!”
“Yeah, but a waitress waiting, waiting for her big break, which will come. She’ll be living the life she’s always wanted and I’ll still be here, frying fish!”
“You have to tell her.”
“It’s getting late, you should probably head off.”
“Ok. You’ll be alright?”
“I’ll be fine. Goodnight.”
“Tell her.”
“Goodnight, Jessica.”
“Goodnight.”
Finally, Jessica’s own front door was in sight and she unlocked the door.
