Midnight Call

Living above the bookshop was great, it was quiet, the rent was affordable and the landlord was friendly and flexible. The only problem was getting to ‘above the bookshop’ and the many, many steps which, late at night, after a long day seemed to multiply with every step. Finally making it to the top, she collapsed on the coach. No sooner had she done so, the telephone rang. It’s shrill shrieks demanded answering and it was Kate waiting impatiently on the other line. Kate was a waitress at the seafood restaurant, The Plaice, up by the harbour wall and was Jessica’s best friend, here in the village.
‘Jess? Jess? Say something so I know you’ve actually picked up!’
‘What do you want Kate? Do you have any idea what time it is right now?’
‘Oh stop whinging and listen. You remember that guy we met the other day, you know, Dean?’
‘No.’
‘You know, when we were out in town, he bought us drinks, works up at the castle...’
‘Oh yeah, how could I possibly forget an ego that big!’
‘What! Well, anyway, he rang me and asked me up to the castle for the day and he’s going to take me round. Can you believe it?’
‘Gee, that’s real great! Now, do you mind if i go to bed now?’
‘Fine, Miss Sarcastic, so it’s eleven o’clock, Saturday. He’ll pick us up.’
‘Whoa, what? Us? What do you mean “us”?’
‘Didn’t I say? He’s bringing a friend for you.’
‘You’re setting me up! No way! No way am I coming!’
‘Come on Jess, don’t leave me on my own, he could turn out to be a total moron! I need you there!’
‘’What do you mean “could turn out to be”!’
‘Jess!’
‘Fine! But you owe me, big time!’
‘You got it! Thanks!’
‘’Night Kate.’

Overcome with sleepiness from the long, double shift, Jessica head to bed.
All too soon, the town hall was bringing the dreaming to an end, summoning all from their slumber.
Jessica then made her way down to find a parcel left at the end of the hall.
