"Alright!" you said aloud, "Geography! That was always a piece of cake for me."
"Really?" Nolan said, "I could never get the hang of it. All those weird places' names to keep track of, and every year something changes. You'll have to help me study." Nolan looks down at you, with a slight smile to his face. You grin, and nod.
As Nolan walked towards the classroom, you looked around. Everywhere you looked you saw anthros, all huge, and all different kinds. There were some reptilian ones, some avian ones, and of course plenty of mammalian ones. What was weirder was that every different type of personality seemed to be represented too. There were jocks, nerds, cheerleaders, stoners, and theater kids. You chuckled, as you thought to yourself, "Maybe Tailwind won't be so different after all."
Finally, the two of you made it to the classroom. Nolan sat down at a desk near the middle of the room, and he picked you up out of his pocket and sat you down on his desk. On it, there was a smaller desk, one scaled just for your size. Sitting next to it was a megaphone; you guessed that was to help everyone hear you whenever you spoke to the class as a whole. You put your book bag underneath the desk, and pulled out a notebook, ready to get this whole ordeal started.
As the rest of the class poured in, you noticed that it was a much smaller amount of students than you normally had in your school. You looked back and saw there were only seven desks (counting yours) in the room. You figured that, with a smaller school, they could afford to have much more detailed instructions. A couple of jockish-type students sat down in the back; one was a muscular mustang wearing a jersey-style shirt and tight black shorts, the other was what looked to be a large, muscular iguana, but at his size he looked closer to a dinosaur to you, who was wearing a black sleeveless t-shirt and khaki shorts. Sitting in the other corner of the back row was a female bear, with a slightly rotund figure and a too-tight t-shirt and skirt.
A few moments later, the seats next to you had been filled. You looked to your left to see a tall, lanky-looking giraffe, wearing a blue-polo shirt and glasses. He looked towards you, and his eyes lit up. Leaning over, he said, "Hey, you must be that human we've all been hearing about!" His voice was very squeaky and nasal sounding. You quickly surmised that this giraffe was one of the nerds of the school. "My name's Wendall. What's yours?"
"Wes," you said, as you secretly hoped he would go back over to his own desk.
"Nice to finally see you. Wow," Wendall said to Nolan as he put his hoof over Wes's head, "he's a lot tinier than I thought he would be."
"Alright, Wendall," Nolan said, chuckling as he gently pushed him away, "don't spaz out."
You shake your head as you turn to look at the seat to the other side of you, where you saw a sharply-dressed female wolf sit down. She turned to you, smiled, and waved. "Hi, there," she said as you waved back. "Nolan, he sure is cute, isn't he?"
Nolan started to blush slightly, as his tail suddenly began to twitch involuntarily. "Uh, Wes, meet Kala, my best friend."
Wes nodded, and Kala leaned down closely to whisper at him, though with as close as she get, he nearly got knocked over by the gust of wind that was her breath. "Take good care of Nolan this year, and he'll take good care of you." She winked at you and then turned back to face the front of the class.
"What was that all about?" you called up to Nolan.
"I'll, uh, tell you about it later," he said as the teacher walked into the room. The teacher was much taller than any of the anthros Wes had yet seen, his head nearly brushing the ceiling. He was a majestic-looking bald eagle, and he looked to be on the older side, though still with enough energy and strength to handle teaching high school. He was wearing a blue sweater vest with a shirt and tie underneath, and brown corduroy pants. The teacher sat his briefcase down on his desk, ruffled a few papers, then stood in front of the class and addressed the students.
"Good morning class, I'm Dr. Kingston. Yes, that's right: Dr. I do have a PhD, and I didn't go through all those years of schooling to have people call me 'Mr.' Now I don't know how the rest of the teachers handle their classes, but in here, you will learn, and you will learn a lot. My goal is that every one of you at the end of the year will know all there is to know about geography, both in the anthro and in the human world."
"Human geography?" the mustang called from the back. "Why would we need to know that?"
Dr. Kingston looked down at a paper on his desk. "Mr. Chad Parker, I take it? Let me tell you why you need to know that. Have you heard of the state of Colorado, in the country called the United States?"
Chad shrugged. "Maybe. What about it?"
Dr. Kingston was now pacing around the room. "Well, did you know that in that one state alone, there rests enough nuclear weaponry to wipe out all the anthro cities in the world twice over?"
Chad gulped. "I--I guess--"
"No, you didn't, Mr. Parker!" Dr. Kingston said, now standing in front of Chad's desk. He brought his wings down forcibly onto the desk, causing a loud BANGing sound. "Most anthros don't know that human technology outpaces our own by a ten-to-one margin. And if you are to become a leader in our society, that lack of knowledge could prove fatal." Dr. Kingston circled his way back to the front of the room. "Now, I don't mean to say that humans are a threat to us; far from it. In fact, the threat is not from the humans themselves, but from our ignorance of their world. It is to that end that our school has agreed to host the first of what I hope to be many exchange students from the nearest human community. Class, meet Wes Schafer."
He gestured towards you, and you sheepishly stood up, turned around and faced the class. After the speech that Dr. Kingston just gave, you weren't sure how to respond, so you just gave a cheesy little wave.
"Wes will be learning with us this year, and one of our own students has gone to his school to learn as well." God, you had forgotten about that. You weren't sure how your school would even be able to adapt to one of these massive creatures. "Nolan will be helping him get acquainted with our culture, so don't be too hard on either of them."
You sigh as you sit back down. You could feel the eyes of everyone staring at you, and you didn't know what to do. Now, you realized, you weren't just a new student in a strange school; you were an ambassador for the entire human race. At this point, you couldn't wait for this year to get over.
