After you wake up the day seemed just like any other, but when the morning news came on they delivered a ground-breaking story. It turned out that astronomers all over the world had spotted a large cylindrical object moving towards the Earth with a comparatively slow and strongly insinuated to be deliberate transition through the solar system. Currently radio transmissions were not registering any response, in spite of accounting for a ten-minute delay at this stage.
There were a number of rumours circulating about throughout the day but little else was heard until the evening news, where you learn that the apparent spaceship was now in orbit around the Earth, moving faster than its altitude would suggest. Other indications suggested it was a massive vessel of 500 miles in diameter and longer than the diameter of the Earth itself. Amazingly it was having no gravitational influence on the world. Reports came in indicating a raised military alert status as a precautionary measure.
More information didn't get through until 10 o'clock when the final news report of the day told of a final achievement in radio communication. Indications suggested that the aliens inside the vessel spoke at least English if not other languages of Earth, although they could've been in possession of translators of some kind, and that they were expressing peaceful intentions for them to study life on Earth in exchange for sharing knowledge about their own life.
Next morning you were just about to set off when a phone call came through. A gruff voice told you that the aliens had apparently managed to pick out specific civilians they wished to meet and you were on the list. Stunned you talked for a while before it became apparent that the military were the ones who had decided to alert you to this fact, a jeep was on its way at that very moment.
By the time it arrived you had packed sufficiently for a week's holiday, expecting to be out of the house for more than a day or two. When the driver, who bore the rank of corporal, helped you with your gear he informed you that an alien pod had landed and you were to be driven straight to the landing site.
