"We have to search your box," Ben said. "If it's the only one that hadn't been busted into, there must be a reason for it. Do you have your key with you?"
Jessica nodded, producing it from her pocket. She was uncertain whether she should open it, especially in front of all the law enforcement officers hanging around the crime scene. She didn't have anything of extreme secrecy in her safe deposit box, but that didn't mean that she wanted the police snooping around inside it either.
Ultimately, curiosity won out over worry and she slid the key into her box and twisted it. The box popped open and she and Ben peered inside. To her shock, it was empty save for a single piece of paper resting on the bottom. It read:
Jess,
I'm so sorry it had to come to this. If you're reading this, I'm already gone... either to prison or out of the country, depending on how this heist went off. Either way, I don't expect to ever see you again, so I just wanted to know that it wasn't all bad between us. I really did start to care about you somewhere along the way.
Love,
Lucien
So now her ex is gone, with the contents of her safe deposit box... and everyone else's. But is Lucien really so clever, or does Jessica know him better than he thinks?
