Suddenly, the incongruous chirping of Beethoven's 9th Symphony broke the tension, emanating from the suspect's jacket pocket.
It distracted them both, but Jessica's training kept her staring straight at the suspect, and his gun, while he glanced down at his pocket.
That split second was enough for her to leap off the path and run through the shrubs. She knew the suspect must have been expecting a call from someone important, because he didn't follow her. Strangely, neither did the dog.
Jessica slowed down and circled back to where she had gotten away, peeking through the branches. The German shepherd was sitting patiently at the suspect's feet. Clearly, they were acquainted.
She took a closer look at the suspect. He was about 40, quite tan, with dark brown hair. The hand that held the cell phone was smooth, even manicured. This is no ordinary thug, Jessica thought, and crept closer.
He was in a heated discussion with whoever was on the other end of the phone. Jessica heard him say.....
