Chapter #5
Political Growth
by: Unknown
“You seriously have to gain weight to be on the town council?” Lisa balked.
Lugolia nodded. “It’s an unwritten rule, but the City Council is comprised of some of our largest people when it comes to size and political power. They see themselves as representatives of the South Barkalow image. The requirements are never set in stone but the men need to be at least 250, which I’m at now. The women should be 300 lbs.”
Lisa almost screamed. “You have to gain another fifty pounds?! That’s terrible! Why should the councilwomen weigh more?”
“It’s really the whim of the current mayor as to how huge he wants his council members. He selected me because of my past leadership experience but I was quickly shunned from the board. My voice of opinion among the council members will probably not get the power it deserves until I at least weigh 275.”
“If you’re the runt of the litter what are the other council members like?”
Lugolia counted off here coworkers on her fingers. “There’s Ramford Stibbins, the biggest of our group. He heads the Building & Zoning Committee. Marcilla Hampton is the real witch of the board. She heads Human Resources. Ethan Fronan is the friendliest and thus heads the Tourism Board. That leaves Rosetta and Marculd DeDalley, sister and brother that handle the remaining Business and Management duties.”
Lisa listed the names on her pad. If she got the chance, the council members might be interesting to interview.
Lugolia rummaged in her bag until she found a package of snack bars. She removed one from its wrapper and chewed it.
To Lisa, it smelled like cinnamon. “What is that?”
Lugolia swallowed. “These bars are part of my gaining regimen. I have to eat one every hour in a half day period. They’re supposed to fill you with calories and stimulate your appetite while slowing the metabolism.”
“It sounds like the opposite of a granola bar.”
Lugolia actually laughed at that. “I guess you’re right.” She grunted again then patted her growing middle. “Ever since the second week they’ve given me stomach pains. I’m sure that I don’t want to know exactly how these things work. Thank the almighty that council members get free attire. I’ve gone up five dress sizes in the past month.”
“Can I look at that?” Lisa asked, reaching for the wrapper.
“Sure.”
Lisa read the label on the back. [Produced by the Sack-Wedge Snack Food Company, 800 Forward St.] If the councilors have to gain weight with these, what other jobs would require these things?
Lugolia seemed to agree with Lisa’s thoughts. “If you get a job in this town, your employer will probably want you to get bigger with these.”
Lisa added it to her list of places to visit. She was about to say goodbye to Lisa Lugolia when a voice yelled out from across the lobby.
“Lisa!”
Both women turned to the speaker. Lisa realized that the speaker was calling for Lugolia. It was…
